jenrgw Your Cell Phone May Be Distracted You From Driving Safely Long Before It Rings

Research recently presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting found that just anticipating calls or messages can be distracting for drivers. The problem seems to be, according to research, that drivers who use cell phones compulsively may be distracted just by the thought of their phones and the messages that they may be receiving. These drivers presented a higher crash risk than other drivers.

There is no law prohibiting thinking about cell phone calls or messages, nor would such a distracted driving law be effective. Instead, education and public awareness campaigns must teach drivers about the risks and help drivers “unplug” literally and figuratively while driving.
