jenrgw Will the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Distracted Driving Contest Work?

Who do teenagers most often listen to? Typically, it is their peers. While that can be a source of frustration for their parents, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking to use peer influence for good by having teens design their own anti-distracted driving message.

To enter the contest, high school students can submit 30 second recordings or scripts for a public service announcement. One winner will be chosen from each of the PennDOT’s 11 districts.

While teens may be more likely swayed by a message created by their peers, this type of government contest has another purpose. Each teen who works on an entry is educating himself or herself about the dangers of distracted driving and will, hopefully, refrain from using a cell phone while driving and other distracted driving activities. That, in and of itself, could make the program effective.
