On September 30, 2010 the distracted driving law changed in Massachusetts.  Below is a summary of what has happened since then*:

  • 733 people have been ticketed for texting and driving in Massachusetts.  Texting and driving is illegal for all drivers under the new law.
  • 344 drivers have been ticketed for improperly using cell phones. While using a handheld cell phone while driving remains legal in Massachusetts, it is illegal to take both hands off the wheel and to drive illegally.
  • 41 drivers under the age of 18 have been ticketed for using their phones while driving.  It is illegal to use phones while driving in Massachusetts if you are under age 18.
  • 7 citations for injuries from negligent driving caused by mobile phone use have been issued.

Authorities are split on whether these numbers are encouraging or discouraging for the first few months of the new law’s enforcement.  What do you think?  Please leave a comment and let us know.
