jenrgw University of North Texas Reports on Texting and Driving Study

A new study about the impact of texting and driving has recently been released by researchers at the University of North Texas (UNT).  UNT researchers looked at 6 years worth of data (2001 -2007) and found that:

  • More than 16,000 people died as a result of texting and driving accidents between 2001 – 2007;
  • The majority of those killed were innocent bystanders – not the texting drivers; and
  • A growing percentage of texting drivers are males driving alone.

Texas does not currently have a ban on texting and driving for all drivers.  Whether this report will sway public opinion and encourage such a ban remains to be seen.  The report remains an important piece of data for all Americans, not just Texans, however, as it highlights the true dangers of texting and driving.
