jenrgw Texas Governor Vetoes Distracted Driving Law

Earlier this month there was optimism that Texas was going to join many other states and enact a distracted driving law.  The legislation went as far as to pass both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate.  However, that would be as far as the legislation would go.

Texas Governor Rick Perry vetoed the distracted driving legislation on June 17 calling the law an “overreach” and accusing the government of trying to micromanage the behavior of adults.  Instead of a law to prevent distracted driving, Governor Perry recommends further education and outreach.

What do you think?  Did Governor Perry make the right decision?  Will education and outreach solve the problem of distracted driving or are state laws needed?  Please leave a comment and share your thoughts.
