jenrgw Illinois House Approves Handheld Cell Phone Ban

Last week, the Illinois House of Representatives voted on a bill to ban handheld cell phone use while driving. In a vote of 62-53 the House approved the bill that would ban handheld cell phone use while driving. If the bill is approved by the Senate and signed into law, the penalties would be $75 for a first violation and $150 for subsequent violations. Talking on a hands free device or speakerphone would remain legal.

A texting while driving ban is already in place in Illinois as is a ban on handheld cell phones in work zones and school zones.

Do you think the Illinois Senate should approve this bill as proposed or make changes? We will continue to monitor the progress of the proposed ban.
