jenrgw How Many Distracted Driving Tickets Were Issued in DC Last Year?

11,868. That is the number of tickets that were issued for distracted driving in Washington D.C. during 2010.  That is a 24% increase in tickets over 2009 D.C. distracted driving tickets.  Neighboring counties in Virginia and Maryland also saw corresponding increases in distracted driving tickets.  There is no indication of whether this increase in tickets corresponds to fewer distracted driving accidents.

Authorities believe that the increase in ticketing is consistent with an increase in awareness about the dangers of texting and driving.  If that is the case then perhaps there will be fewer tickets and fewer texting while driving accidents in D.C. next year as people get the message that texting and driving is dangerous and potentially deadly.
