jenrgw How Many Accidents are Caused by Cell Phone Use in the US?

A report released last week found that cell phones and other electronic devices are responsible for up to 25% of motor vehicle accidents in the United States. The study completed by the Governors Highway Safety Association found that drivers are distracted up to half of the time that they are behind the wheel.

Yet, despite these statistics, the Governors Highway Safety Association and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration disagree on how best to prevent distracted driving accidents.  While both groups support bans on texting and bans on cell phone use for new drivers, they differ on whether it is important to ban handheld cell phone use by more experienced drivers.

What do you think?  Do state laws that prohibit handheld cell phone use improve safety or are drivers just as distracted when using their cell phones hand free devices?
