jenrgw Distracted Driving Accidents are Not Just the Fault of Distracted Drivers

Distracted pedestrians also bear some responsibility for their actions when their distraction causes an accident.  At least lawmakers in two states, New York and Arkansas, think they do.  Legislators in both states are looking to limit the use of of cell phones and electronic equipment such as Ipods and MP3 players by pedestrians.

The proposed law in Arkansas would prevent a pedestrian, runner or bicyclist from being on, parallel or adjacent to a road with earphones in both years.  An earphone in one ear would be legal.  New York’s proposed law would prevent all electronic equipment from being used in crosswalks in cities with populations of 1 million or more.

Do you think laws preventing distracted pedestrians are a good idea?  Will they help prevent accidents?  Leave us a comment and let us know.
