It has been ten years since two Oregon police officers were killed by a drowsy driver on Interstate 5. Recently, family members, friends, colleagues and others gathered at the site of that tragic accident to dedicate a memorial sign for the fallen officers.
As the group was gathered for the dedication ceremony, a driver allegedly slowed down to look at the sign and rear ended the car in front of him. There were no life threatening injuries reported in that distracted driving crash, but it serves as a good reminder that it not only cell phones that can distract drivers. Signs up by the side of the road, animals, groups of people, or an interesting pedestrian, for example, can all be distracting and can result in serious and life threatening crashes.
