jenrgw Changes to Maryland Texting While Driving Ban

On Thursday May 19, 2011 Maryland Governor O’Malley signed a bill strengthening the state’s ban on texting while driving.

While it had been against the law in Maryland to send a text while driving, it is now also against the law to:

  • Read a text while driving.
  • Read or send any other kind of electronic message such as an e-mail while driving.
  • Send a text while the car is stopped at a red light.

The new law will go into effect on October 1.  Those found to be in violation of the distracted driving law face $500 fines and one point on their licenses.
