jenrgw Are New Rules Coming to Prevent Haz-Mat and Commercial Drivers From Distracted Driving?

In early 2010, the federal government banned commercial drivers from texting and driving.  In late 2010, the government proposed a new rule that would also ban commercial truck drivers from driving a commercial truck while holding a hand held device.  The consequences for violating the rules would be steep and a driver would face a potential fine of $2750 and license revocation for each violation.

Additionally, the federal government, through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has proposed a rule that ban all use of cell phones while driving for those transporting hazardous materials.

Both rules are currently pending and both rules are subject to be enacted as proposed, to be changed, or to be discarded.  However, both distracted driving rules also have the potential to save lives.
