jenrgw Are Hands Free Cell Phones Safe?

Many states have enacted cell phone laws that prohibit drivers from holding cell phones while driving but that allow drivers to use hands free devices.  However, some people are raising concerns over the hands free devices as well.  They argue that is the conversation that is most distracting, not the cell phone in the hand.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has indicated that he will not seek to ban hands free cell phone use while driving at this time.  However, he has said that the Department of Transportation is looking into whether hands free devices, including things such as OnStar and Sync, are a cognitive distraction for drivers.  After the research is collected, restrictions may be imposed.

In the meantime, it is important to limit all distractions, whether you are holding a cell phone or not, so that you are not involved in a distracted driving crash.
