On November 23 -24, 2010 the Coastal Division of the California Highway Patrol held its first annual “Hands Free is Ticket Free” campaign with local police.  The enforcement area included the area between Santa Cruz and Ventura.

In the 48 hours of the campaign, 368 tickets were issued for violations of California’s ban on using a wireless telephone while driving. Another ticket was issued for texting or reading a electronic device while driving.

This campaign was meant to educate people about the dangers of distracted driving and save lives.  In 2008, more than 30,000 people were involved in California crashes where distraction was a cause of the accident.
